Tinnitus is defined as the sensation of hearing hissing, chirping, whistling, buzzing or some other noise that isn’t there. It can be continuous or intermittent and can be loud or soft. It may be most annoying at night when one is trying to fall asleep. Rather than being a condition itself, it is a symptom of an underlying problem such as injury to the ear, a circulatory disorder, or age-related hearing loss.
The ear consists of three parts that are all vital in helping a person hear and have balance. They are:
- The outer ear that funnels sound.
- The middle ear that transmits sound.
- The inner ear that transmits sound waves and forwards them to the brain through nerves.
The following are some things that may lead to tinnitus:
- Cerumen impaction
- Hypertension
- Cardiovascular disease
- Hearing loss
- Medication withdrawal
- Allergies
- TMJ
- Ear infection
- Emotional stress
- Multiple sclerosis
- Meniere’s disease
- Head and neck trauma
Caring for Tinnitus
If a person has to be in a loud environment, it is important for him or her to wear ear plugs and do what is necessary to protect the health of the ear. If someone has been in a car accident or suffered another injury, it is possible that his tinnitus is due to damage that has been done to the upper cervical neck. In this case, visiting an upper cervical chiropractor is of the utmost importance.
Even a slight misalignment of just ¼ of a millimeter can wreak havoc on the entire body and cause such health problems as tinnitus. Don’t think that just because the accident was a long time ago it cannot affect a person now. It is a progressive problem that will just continue to worsen if not taken care of.
I examine my patients for their individual misalignments. I then use a gentle procedure that does not require me to pop or force the spine into place. Rather, it is a soft touch to a specific area of the neck that helps the bones to realign naturally. The body’s healing properties then take over and help repair the damage done. Often this is all that is needed to rid a person of the annoyance of tinnitus.
