I’m a long-time vertigo chiropractor in Dublin, CA, and I’ve seen how people misunderstand this disorder. Contrary to a commonly held belief, vertigo is not the fear of heights. Instead, it is a false sensation where the person affected feels that the world around them is moving even though there is no movement.
True vertigo always has a rotational component to it. And if you are over 40 years of age, this condition becomes more prevalent.
I’m writing this article to educate my readers about what vertigo is and what causes it to occur. I will also provide you with several natural options you can choose from, along with one that can provide long-term relief.
Reasons for Vertigo
Vertigo is a balance disorder that most often occurs because of a problem in the inner ear. The spinning sensation of vertigo can be strong enough to cause nausea and loss of balance. And unlike dizziness, it does not give the feeling of fainting. It is classified as a symptom rather than a condition. This means that vertigo is usually a symptom of another health condition (or perhaps medication) that a person has.
People with high blood sugar and cholesterol levels can suffer from vertigo. And because of how severe the spinning can get, it can impact your ability to perform your daily routines.
Natural Options for Vertigo Relief
When it comes to dealing with vertigo, natural options are always the way to go. Here are a few suggestions:
Change Your Eating Habits
Going for processed food is often the most convenient option. However, these food products may also trigger migraines, which bring along vertigo as a symptom. Other migraine-triggering foods you can avoid are cheese, red wine, and chocolate. Instead, go for a Vitamin C-rich diet like green leafy vegetables, cantaloupe, and sweet potatoes. Other options are broccoli, strawberries, tomatoes, and green peppers.
If you want to see significant changes and find relief, one way is by following a low-sodium diet. It applies most to those who have vertigo from Meniere’s disease.
Increase Vitamin D
Vitamin D deficiency is commonplace worldwide. Research shows that around 1 billion people around the globe have low levels of vitamin D in their bodies. And when you have low levels of vitamin D, you are more predisposed to positional vertigo.
Save yourself from this by increasing your vitamin D consumption — the best way to get a healthy amount is through exposure of your skin to sunlight, but the latitude at which you live and the time of year can affect how much vitamin D your body can produce from the Sun’s rays. Fatty fish and seafood are also rich in this nutrient, so consider adding them to your diet.
Garlic and Sesame Oil Drops
Garlic and sesame oil can relieve vertigo symptoms when taken simultaneously. To do this, crush two garlic cloves and add to a pan with two teaspoons of sesame oil. Cook until you see browning, then strain the oil into a cup.
Once cooled, drip two or three drops of this concoction into the ear. Let it sit for one minute before draining. You can use this on both ears.
Apple Cider Vinegar and Raw Honey
Here’s another mixture you can try: unfiltered, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar and raw honey. Both of these help regulate blood flow to the brain.
Take this by adding two parts honey and one part apple cider vinegar. Consume a tablespoon of this mixture 2-3 times daily to achieve the best results.
Change Your Pillow
Using a pillow that is too flat or too fluffy may lead to vertigo episodes because of the strain it puts on the neck. It can also cause a pinched nerve, which may lead to other forms of discomfort.
People who experience vertigo from a flattened pillow usually feel it upon waking up. We recommend that you check your pillow every six months, not only to avoid vertigo but to also improve neck posture.
Get a Good Night’s Rest
Lack of sleep is one of the biggest triggers for vertigo. Make sure you get around seven to eight hours of sleep a night and avoid taking a nap during the day.
Enhance your sleeping environment by keeping it cool and dark. Limit the amount of light, even from alarm clocks.
Manage Your Stress Levels
Keeping stress under control can help with vertigo. If you are having trouble identifying and coping with your stress levels, seeing a counselor might be a good option.
Relaxation and breathing exercises can also be a significant benefit. Taking a walk, listening to music, or taking a bubble bath can all help reduce stress.
Drink Enough Water
According to the American Heart Association, dehydration is also a cause for vertigo episodes to arise. When your fluid levels drop, blood pressure quickly follows, causing dizziness.
The body needs 8 to 12 cups of liquid a day, and that is not limited to just water. But water is the best choice because it is free of calories and caffeine. It is also considered as a non-diuretic.
Another Natural Relief Option for Vertigo
One study done in Germany showed a link between a misaligned C1 vertebra and vertigo. The C1 vertebra is the uppermost vertebra of the neck and is responsible for protecting the brainstem.
So when a misalignment happens, the brainstem endures pressure, and it can malfunction. The result can be the development of various health conditions and symptoms, including vertigo.
But upper cervical chiropractors can correct misalignments of the vertebrae. It is something we do well here in my clinic, Vital Life Wellness Center.
Unlike some traditional chiropractic methods, we do not pop or crack any bones to fix the misalignments. Our methods are gentle, precise, and non-invasive.
