Some may feel that if they are suffering from neck pain, it will feel better if they can just get the neck to crack. This is called self-manipulation and can be very dangerous. In fact, doing this repeatedly can cause the person to experience more pain and problems as time goes on.
The first place one can start finding relief for neck pain is by calling an upper cervical chiropractor and making an appointment. More-than-likely, one of the top two vertebrae of the neck is out of alignment. This can have a damaging effect on the entire spine, causing it to become misaligned as well. Since a person may not be able to get an appointment right away, is there anything he can do at home to help besides the risky practice of cracking his neck?
Icing the Correct Way
- Get comfortable: lie on the bed or in a recliner
- Protect the neck: Use a paper towel or thin cloth over the ice pack to avoid frostbite
- Put it where it hurts: place the ice pack directly on the painful spot
- Set the timer: Never use ice packs for more than 20 minutes as this can reduce blood flow
- Relax!
You may need to do this more than once, but it is important to take breaks in between. A general rule of thumb to follow is to use ice 3 or 4 times during a day or, with new injuries, once an hour for up to 48 hours. This should give you some relief until you are able to see an upper cervical chiropractor.
Upper Cervical and Neck Pain
We will be happy to examine our patient’s neck for any misalignments and get started right away helping them find relief. Often, it only takes one or two adjustments to see benefits for our patients. We use a gentle technique that allows the natural healing processes of the body to take over and restore the spine to a healthy state.
