It may be hard to believe, but it is estimated that out of every 5 people, 4 will have back pain at some time in their life. Back pain is among the most common ailments in the world, and it is highest ranking when it comes to the number of cases of disability. Is there anything a person can do to reduce his chances of developing back pain or to cope with it once he has it?
Eating a Healthy Diet for Back Pain Relief
Eating healthy is vital to the overall health of the body and especially important in helping to reduce inflammation. It may seem hard to do, but remember, it is harder to live with a bad back and deal with pain on a daily basis. Here are some foods to work on cutting out of one’s diet to reduce inflammation:
- MSG
- Trans and saturated fat
- Alcohol
- Whole or 2% milk
- Gluten – anything made with wheat, rye, spelt, or barley
- Processed sugars
- All processed foods
It is a good idea to begin eliminating these foods slowly so as not to cause the body to react negatively. Cutting out fast food and soda is a great place to begin. Opt to bring your lunch to work and drink tea sweetened with honey instead of a burger and soda from a fast food joint.
It is also important to supplement with vitamins as most Americans do not get enough in diet alone. Many people test low in vitamin D. This can lead to back pain as vitamin D is important when it comes to absorbing calcium. The sun is also an excellent way to get some extra vitamin D, so try taking a lunchtime walk if the weather is nice.
Keep the Spine as Healthy as Possible
A misalignment in the bones of the upper cervical spine, especially the top two vertebrae of the neck, can be a major contributor to back pain. These bones dictate one’s posture. Therefore, if a misalignment is present, the spine shifts to compensate, leading to back pain. A visit to an upper cervical chiropractor can help in this area.
